Everything you save ends up in one place, whichever way it came in. This page covers how to connect each one. The docs go into more detail.
Device keys
The browser extension, the desktop app and the MCP server connect to your account with a device key.
- Sign in at tryultrathink.com and open Settings, then Device keys.
- Type a Device name, such as “Work laptop”, and press Create key.
- Copy the key straight away. It’s only shown once.
Make one key for each computer or app, so you can revoke one without touching the others. Revoking a key stops it working straight away.
Browser extension
For Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers.
Install it from Settings, Downloads in the app. There are two choices:
- Direct download: a zip of the latest version. Unzip it, open
chrome://extensions, switch on Developer mode, press Load unpacked and pick the folder. - Chrome Web Store: Ultrathink on the Chrome Web Store. Easier to install, but the store version can lag behind. The direct download is always the newest.
Connect it: right-click the Ultrathink icon, choose Options, paste your device key and press Save.
Use it:
| What | Windows | Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Save this page | Ctrl+Shift+4 | Cmd+Shift+4 |
| Screenshot | Ctrl+Shift+5 | Cmd+Shift+5 |
The popup saves after three seconds, and typing a note restarts the count. Tick All tabs to save every tab in the window. Change the shortcuts at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
Desktop app
For Windows 10 or later, and Macs with Apple silicon or Intel chips. Download it from Settings, Downloads. The Mac version is a disk image (.dmg): open it and drag Ultrathink to Applications.
Connect it: copy your device key, then right-click the Ultrathink icon in the system tray (the menu bar on a Mac) and choose Set Device Key from Clipboard.
From the same menu you can switch on Start on Login. Task reminders are switched on in the web app, in Settings, Notifications.
On your phone
Open tryultrathink.com in your phone’s browser and sign in. An iPhone app is coming soon.
The AI (Pro)
There’s nothing to connect for the AI. It’s part of Pro and runs on Ultrathink’s own accounts, so you never add an AI key.
MCP server (Pro)
The Ultrathink MCP server works with AI apps that support MCP, such as Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. It lets them search your entries, read one in full, find related entries, list entries with the same filters as your views, see what changed lately and list everything about a person or a topic. With a read and write key they can also save and change entries, many at once, write comments, tidy up topics and people, bring entries back from Recently deleted, make and change views, lay out your canvases and undo what they did. They delete things or change your settings only if you switch that on for the key.
To connect Claude Code:
- Make a device key, then switch on API access for it. Choose Read only or Read and write. A read and write key has two more switches, both off at first: Allow deletes and Allow settings changes. Switch them on only if you want the AI app to delete things or change your settings.
- Run this once, with your key in place of
YOUR_DEVICE_KEY:
claude mcp add --transport http ultrathink https://us-central1-ultrathink-50f7f.cloudfunctions.net/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_DEVICE_KEY"
- Run
claude mcp listand check Ultrathink shows as connected.
Cursor, VS Code and any other MCP app that can call a remote server with a header use the same address and key. The full guide is in the docs: MCP server. For apps that only run local servers, such as Claude Desktop, the older two-tool package is on GitHub at ultrathink-mcp.
API (Pro)
The Ultrathink API lets your own tools search, read, save, update and delete entries, and list your topics and people. It uses a device key with API access switched on, and a read only key can’t save anything. See API access in the docs.
